What Are We Striving to Do?

Build Houses

This is the first priority! In June of 2009 the Mayor of
Tegucigalpa donated to Torch Missions, Inc. enough tin
roofing for 90 houses. We plan to help raise the money
to buy the rest of the supplies to build the houses. This is
approximately $1200 per house. The houses are simple
structures which can be built in about 4-5 hours. Upon
completion the houses are dedicated with a simple
ceremony and prayer.

Sometimes houses are built in memory or honor of a
person, persons, or a group. If you donate the money to
build a house, we will supply a dedicatory plaque to be
placed in the home at the time of dedication. For
example, recently a Sunday School class donated the
money to build a house to honor their beloved teacher.
Others have built houses in memory of loved ones. If you
have questions about any of this, then feel free to email
Allen Burris at allen@mitchellchurch.org.

Who Are We?

Help for Honduras is a ministry of the Mitchell Church
of Christ
that partners with other Christian ministries
actively serving the Honduran people.

Collect Items to be Shipped

T-shirts - new or gently used in good condition T-shirts are needed in Honduras.

Shoes - athletic shoes or other shoes that are comfortable and practical are in demand in Honduras.

Toys - good quality toys in perfect working condition will be distributed among the children of
Honduras, especially to those living in children's homes.

Why not set up a collection point in your church, school, club, or place of work?

Send Corn

We are partnering with the Bryantsville Hunger Relief Project and the International Restoration
Corporation
to ship corn to Honduras.

Send Workers

We are looking to send small teams of builders to Honduras 2-4 times a year. Our plans call for trips
that last a week. Each worker is responsible for raising his or her own funds for the trip. The cost is
approximately $1000; this includes everything. An experienced worker will lead each group and will
partner with workers in Honduras. The primary task would be to build several houses during the
week. Ideally each worker will raise some money to build a house in honor or memory of someone,
but this is not a requirement.

These smaller teams will go at times other than the summer. We encourage youth and/or
inexperienced people to go on the larger, more structured summer trips through Torch Mission, Inc.

Why?

Because we love God and want to serve him by
serving others. God has a special place in his
heart for the poor, and the Honduran people are
some of the poorest people in the world. The
words of Jesus in Matthew 25:31-46 help us
define how to love and serve others.

About half the population of Honduras lives on
two dollars a day or less, and the country has
not yet recovered from the devastation caused
by Hurricane Mitch in 1998. The International
Fund for Agricultural Development says this:
"Rural poverty in Honduras is among the most
severe in Latin America. Approximately 53
percent of the population is rural, and it is
estimated that 75 percent of the rural population
lives below the poverty line, unable to meet
basic needs. The country still has high rates of
population growth, infant mortality, child
malnutrition and illiteracy. These and other
social and economic factors reflect its status as
the second poorest country in the Western
Hemisphere, after Haiti."

What Can You Do?

Donate funds to help build houses. Unless otherwise designated all funds received will be
used for the purchase of supplies to build houses in Honduras. Remember, for only $1200 you
can buy the materials to build a house.

Donate funds to help purchase a load of corn for Honduras. The price for a load of corn
varies from year to year, but most years it takes between $2500-3000 to buy a load.

Donate to help send builders. Some people are not in a position to fund themselves for a trip
to Honduras. If you would like to help cover the cost of a willing worker, then specify that with
your donation.

All donations should be made out and sent to:

The Mitchell Church of Christ
1004 West Main Street
Mitchell, Indiana 47446

Be sure to specify your donation is for "Help for Honduras."

Collect shirts, shoes, and toys.
